Free Spooky Season Bat Pattern!

At PWJ we don’t only sew, we CRAFT! Crochet, wreaths, dream catchers, macrame, and so much more!

A year or so ago we delved into crochet spiders (click for the crochet pattern) and a had ton of fun making a cute lil pirate spider for Halloween.

This year I’m thinking we need a cute squishy bat to cuddle during our spooky movie nights!

Now I am a HUGGGEE fan of chenille yarn – specifically Premier Parfait Chunky – which made an 11″ bat. This pattern can be done with any gauge yarn you like however it will change the finished size of the bat.

Using a worsted weight #4 will give you a much smaller bat while a #6 chunky like Bernat Blanket yarn will give you a larger bat.

Besides your yarn type and colors you will also need to decide how you want to do the eyes. I am do not like using safety eyes for any crochet projects as they pose to many safety issues and you can only place them before you finish a project.

I find that using felt eye (which there are tons on Etsy or you can make your own) or embroidering the eyes give a much better finish and allow you to better place them.

For my eyes I did a 2″ felt safety eye with vinyl pupils

Okay so enough talking here is the FREE Chunky Bat pattern 🙂 You can find the PDF version on my Etsy if you would like a printable copy.

Assembly:

  • Sew the head to the body using the 2 open ends; add more stuffing as you sew to reinforce the neck
  • Attached the ears by sewing them at an angle, the bottom point to the head at row 12  and   the top point at row 6
    • I put about 8-9 stitches between the 2 ears across the back, but space them how they feel right to you.
  • Sew the feet at the bottom of the body so they sit in front with about 5-7 stitches between
  • Attach the wings about 3 rows from the neck of the bat at the back; no stitches in between the wings – I sew mine with the wings pointed up
  • If you are adding felt eyes or embroidering them attach them at Row 8 with 3-4 stitches between them
  • Embroider fangs/mouth if wanted

And you are done! Weave or tuck your ends in and you have a fun chunky squishy bat for spooky movie nights this Halloween Season!
